The university hall was constructed in the time period between 1963 and 1965 when the University of illinois at chicago circle (UICC) initially opened. The campus gained instant popularity because of its architectural design. The campus was design was based on a style called “Brutalism” which takes its origin from the french word béton brut which translates to raw concrete.
This office building is 28-stories tall and was designed by Walter Netsch. It measures 150 feet wide up to the eighth floor, 160 feet wide from ninth to the sixteenth floor, and 170 feet wide from the seventeenth to the twenty eighth floor. The “rectilinear” architectural design was considered revolutionary during that time period because of its user-friendliness, practicality and the economic aspect of it.
Netsch designed all the windows in UH and all the other buildings on campus to be long and narrow in a “block I” shape. The idea of these recessed windows was to limit the light that enters the building and thus eliminating the need for blinds/curtains. The central long rectangular part of the window was made of bronze glass which prevents heat and light in the summer. The trapezoidal part of the window was made of clear glass.
