In an effort to have more energy efficient lighting, UIC invested $1,066,000. In addition to this, UIC also received grants amounting to $933,000 from Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and rebates amounting to $150,000 from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity between FY06-FY10. As a part of this, 8,200 T12 fluorescent lighting fixtures in the University Hall was replaced with high efficiency electronic ballasts and T8 lamps in 2007. This helped the campus save 1,564,000 kWh in 2008. This means that UIC saved over $ 172,000/ year in electricity costs at the rate of 11 cents per kWh.
